WILPF, Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, works for world disarmament, full rights for women, racial/economic justice, an end to all forms of violence at all levels of society, and changing government priorities to meet human needs.
Our Mission
We are members of the largest and oldest women's peace organization in the world. The Women's International League for Peace and Freedom has sections in 40 countries, coordinated by an international office in Geneva. WILPF members support the work of the United Nations with consultative status and serve on several NGO UN committees.
The San Jose group is one of 55 national branches in the U.S.
The San Jose branch of the Women's International League of Peace & Freedom received this year's 2017 Excellence Award from the County Commission on the Status of Women. We were honored at their Women's Equality Day.

WILPF history starts in 1915 when 1,200 women from a diversity of cultures and languages came together at The Hague during the First World War, to study the causes of war and advance methods of peace. Jane Addams - founder of Hull House and the field of social work as we know it - led the American delegation and became the first president of WILPF.
WILPF is the first international women’s peace organisation in the world, and boasts two Nobel Peace Prize winners from among its membership. In 1931, Jane Addams was awarded the prestigious prize for her peace-keeping efforts. In 1946, WILPF’s first International Secretary, Emily Greene Balch, was also presented with the award – an acknowledgement of WILPF’s impact on world affairs.
WILPF is one of the first organisations to gain consultative status (category B) with the United Nations, and the only women’s anti-war organisation so recognised. From this international position WILPF is dedicated to building a global feminist movement leading to genuine peace.
A feminist peace requires advocating for gender analysis in all national and international policy decision-making. To apply the pressure necessary to make this happen, WILPF is creating the space for mobilizing the power of women across the world.

Hidden away at the First A. M. E. Zion Church in San Jose, is a treasure of African American memorabilia collected and curated by Clarissa Moore, a member of the Santa Clara County Human Rights Commission.
Join Clarissa for a virtual tour of this local archive at the WILPF meeting. You will see a "Manumission Papers" document, posters from the '70's about abolitionists, Carter Woodson and Black History Week, plantation images that contrast slave quarters with stately mansions.

This virtual meeting is our regular third Friday WILPF SJ meeting.The San Jose Branch of WILPF meets every month for a free program about people pursuing peace and justice in our communities and around the world. Everyone is welcome to join us.

We select issues based on the times that threaten the peace or justice of our society and the world. Among the campaigns we've launched are: Save the Water (resist privatization of water supplies); Building Peace with Justice in the Middle East (in collaboration with the national WILPF); Tax Day leafleting to protest use of our tax dollars for the military and suggest ways to redirect our resources; Holiday Peace Fair, an alternative gift-buying festival with international entertainment and food; Women's March on Washington (joining with other Bay area groups); Clothesline Project to reverse and transform the harmful effects of violence against women.
The Raging Grannies is an activist organization with branches in many cities across the U.S. and Canada, and in other countries. They are (mostly) women old enough to be grandmothers, who dress up in wild clothes in defiance of stereotypes of older women, and sing satirical songs at protests, marches and rallies. They welcome men and younger women and children to join them in raising a voice against tyranny.
We collaborate with other local groups on issues of common interest. Our partners include: The San Jose Peace & Justice Center; National Women's Political Caucus; Ethical Culture Society of Silicon Valley;
